GBMA101: Interview with COBA Academic Advisor

Hello GBM Cougars,

This semester, we have a new GBM Academic Advisor, Nubia junco Williams!

Don't miss this great interview!

Q1: What is a certain requirement for GBM major in comparison to other major students?

one of the main things that you as GBM student, need to go abroad do what either studying abroad for a semester or doing an internship abroad. By then it is different for international students. they can do senior experience here. so that's the main thing for the GBM students compare to marketing or management there7s a requirement for graduation. The one thing they used to be required take a foreign language test, but it is not a requirement anymore. so you don't have to worry about it.

Q2: Is there a specific time length the semester for an internship could that be less or more?

You need to do either the spring, summer, or fall semester that you need to be done. You can not do in winter because it is too short. so in because a lot of companies want students should be between 4 to 6 months commitments. Q3: Could you do a brief overview of the difference between an international internship, study abroad, and senior experience?

So, study abroad, there is an international office(Global office) that help you choose a school in a country that you would like to attend, and while you are there you are going to be taking a lot of classes where you will be doing here. So you would take 12 to 15 units. So that way you don't miss your requirement. when you are abroad, you continue doing your classes there. The internship is where you will look for a company you will be working with them for 4 to 6 months. you will not be taking classes during you are doing an internship. you will be hands-on learning items that will help you later on to get a job. Then, senior experience, you will do here, and that is working with 5 other students from COBA. you will be working with a company, and you will present the result, what was your project, what you do for the company, how you solve the issue that they brought into you fix that is consultants. So you could do the study abroad and the senior experience as a finished requirement or you can just do an international internship.

Q4:If I graduate in May(spring semester), could I do my international internship in the following summer?

Yes. you can, For example, if you wanted to walk in May and you want to finish internship in summer, you can do that. However, you need to make sure that you apply for summer graduation. That way, we are able to help you register for the internship because it is a class even it is an internship. it is a class GBM495, 3 units so in order for that everyone management services will allow you to register for the class you need to say summer otherwise you say spring, you will not get registration for summer, but you can still walk in May.

Q5: Is there a number one question you get asked from GBM students?

Mainly, the language. are you guys still required to do the language? Yes, you are, but that's at level 201. intermediate level whatever language you decide to do. You don't need to fluent. then it is a requirement to do either study abroad or internship abroad. Depending on the situation, no matter what you can not wait you must be done before the passing grade in our requirements that if you plan to do with the internship abroad, there is a documentation that you need to be submitted before you go. you need to be approved by the department chair, your faculty advisor, or by myself. because I need to verify to get if you have correct GPA which is a 2.5. You should be done GBM425 and MGMT461. If those things are not done on time, you will need to get done before you go abroad. Our department chair and director of Global Business Management is Cata Ratiu.

Q6: Is there any advice that you have for GBM students in order to be successful in applying?

First thing, if you are pre-business students, and trying to go into GBM, make sure you submit the business status application on time. The deadline was November 10th, in order for us to process the application on time before registration starts. We will still accept them the application, however, it will do as we have time to get through them since we are getting busier. but it will get processed. Second thing, make sure you should take prerequisites class first. make sure you follow that correct checklist, and see the course sequence, if you do not know which one to choose because there are two different kinds, please come to the advising office. If you see a new class that is being offered is not on your checklist, come in the office and we will let you know if you are allowed to take it or not for elective units. just come in and ask us first before you take it.

There is so many important information for GBM student, and hopefully, this interview would help you to understand more! If you have more questions, please let us know, or come to COBA advising office!
